World print market continues to grow

According to data published by the IDC (International Data Corporation), 26.4 million printers and MFPs were sold in the first quarter of 2014.  This represents an increase of 2.1% over last year.  Q1 2014 was the third consuctive quarter showing year-on-year growth. 

Looking in more detail at the various market segments, inkjet represents 58.4% of all units sold (down 3% against the preceding quarter), while laser sales were up 4% to 38% in Q1 2014. 

Sales of monochrome laser machines were up 2.6% year on year, and now make up 80.1% of the laser market in terms of units shipped.  Color laser device sales were up 8.9% on the same period last year, and now represent 19.9% of worldwide laser sales. 

The two biggest printer markets are Asia/Pacific (discounting Japan) and Eastern Europe, with growth of 5.5% and 7.7% respectively.

Looking at how the brands have fared, we see HP at the top with a market share of 40.3% and growth of 6.5% on last year's sales figures.  IDC put this success down to promotional activities aimed directly at end customers.

Canon's sales were down by 7.2% compared to this time last year, but they remain in second place in terms iof market share.

Epson are in third place with 14.3% of the world printer market with good MFP sales; followed by Brother then Samsung.

Ricoh, for the very first time, finds itself at number five in terms of worldwide laser sales.
